Anti-Racism Resources and Advocacy

In conjunction with SNMA, MSFC, LMSA, and SDIC

CMSC supports the UIC Student Demands related to the University of Illinois System’s lack of effort and response in light of police violence.

As communities across the country, including the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM), process the senseless violence against Black people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, Chicago Medical Student Council (CMSC) wants to condemn prejudice in all its forms and stand in solidarity with Black and brown folx disproportionately targeted by police brutality.

In line with UICOM’s mission and values, CMSC proudly celebrates the exceptional diversity at the College of Medicine and is committed to holding those who perpetuate systemic racism accountable. We must work further to ensure that all of our students, regardless of their background, race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religious identity, ability, or documentation status, feel safe, supported, and uplifted at our school. We are calling on our student body to not only mourn those we have lost, but also to turn our anguish into action.

As future physicians, our actions carry immense power; we have a unique ability to demand social justice. Our future patients will count on us to advocate for them in many ways- whether through improving access to healthcare, holding fellow physicians accountable for their harmful rhetoric or behavior, or proposing\ fundamental reforms to police departments and our criminal justice system. If we want a world where Black and brown lives are valued, we must act now. (Adapted from CMSC Statement made on May 31st, 2020)
